At the end of 2021, I commissioned John to write arrangements of Ukrainian music for a large ensemble. I love how he does that — how he deconstructs the body of the song, but preserves what it embodies, creates the spaces of total fission, and gathers sounds into swarms. It always surprises me, it always awes me, and yet it always feels natural. Due to the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, that commission never happened, but, to exploit another metaphor, a grain has sprouted.

The song “Red Shades”, recorded for this album, is an arrangement of the Ukrainian song “Oi u luzi chervona kalyna” (“Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow”). I didn’t commission this one. It found the way on its own when history created the thematic loop.

The song was written around 1914 by Ukrainian theatre director and composer Stepan Charnetskyi, based on an old folk tune. During World War I, it became popular among soldiers of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, a volunteer military formation that fought for the liberation of Ukrainian lands from Russian rule. In 2022, the Ukrainian singer and volunteer enlistee Andriy Khlyvnyuk recorded a short video of himself singing the song, making it popular once again, once again when Ukraine is fighting for freedom from Russia.

If “history doesn’t repeat itself, it rhymes”, then it also rhythmizes. But the nature of the rhythm of rhymes is that when you translate the text into another language, it is very hard to save its original tempo. I assume the same is true with the interpretation of others’ experiences. Here, I hope that the encoding of this verse through the abstract language of music will much better serve to spread the word.

“Red Shades” manifests resilience with “Peace and Justice” emerging both as an album and an aspiration. Holding onto it, hoping for it,  is something we must all actively practice. Eventually, it should lead to tangible changes – emancipation for those who seek it, retribution for those who deserve it, peace and justice for all.

I am grateful, John, for these arrangements you did not have to make but chose to make, and for your support and care. For amplifying this story, translating it, masterfully preserving what it embodies, and gathering big bands around it. And of course, for all the music and such a much-needed practice of hope.

One more rhyme. The first time I ever travelled abroad was to Lisbon. The first jazz club I ever attended was Hot Clube de Portugal. Maybe some ideas were sown there.

Наприкінці 2021 року я замовила Джону аранжування української музики для великого ансамблю. Мені подобається, як він це робить — як деконструює пісенне тіло, але зберігає те, що пісня втілює, як створює простори тотального розщеплення і збирає звуки у рої. Його композиції мене завжди дивують, захоплюють і водночас вони завжди відчуваються природними. Через повномасштабне російське вторгнення в Україну в лютому 2022-го наш проєкт так і не відбувся, проте якщо продовжувати говорити метафорами, зерно проросло.

Пісня «Red Shades», записана для цього альбому, є аранжуванням української пісні «Ой у лузі червона калина». Її запропонувала не я. Вона знайшла свій шлях сама, коли історія створила тематичну петлю.

«Ой у лузі червона калина» була написана близько 1914 року українським театральним режисером і композитором Степаном Чарнецьким на основі народної пісні. Під час Першої світової війни вона стала популярною серед бійців Українських січових стрільців — добровольчого військового формування, що боролося за визволення українських земель від російського ярма. У 2022 році український музикант і військовий Андрій Хливнюк записав коротке відео, де він співає цю пісню, зробивши її знову популярною, знову у часи, коли Україна б’ється за свободу від росії.

Якщо «історія не повторюється, а римується», то вона також і ритмізується. Проте природа ритму рим така, що коли перекладаєш текст іншою мовою, вкрай важко зберегти його оригінальний темп. Припускаю, що з інтерпретацією чужого досвіду відбувається те саме. Тут я сподіваюся, що прочитання цієї історії через абстрактну мову музики набагато краще допоможе донести її суть.

«Red Shades» маніфестує стійкість, «Peace and Justice» — мир та справедливість — це і альбом, і прагнення. Триматися за нього, спиратися — має стати нашою активною практикою. Зрештою, вона втілиться у конкретних змінах  — свободі тим, хто її прагне, розплаті тим, хто на неї заслуговує, миру та справедливості для всіх.

Я вдячна тобі, Джоне, за ці аранжування, які ти не мусив робити, але обрав зробити, за підтримку і турботу. За посилення цієї історії, її переклад, майстерне збереження її єства й за біг-бенди навколо неї. І, звісно, за всю цю музику та таку необхідну практику надії.

Ще одна рима. Моя перша в житті поїздка за кордон була до Лісабона. Першим джаз-клубом, який я відвідала, був Hot Clube de Portugal. Можливо, якісь ідеї були посіяні саме там.
